Why "We Theresa's Kids"

Finding Purpose in Pain: Healing and Hope After Loss

If Webster's Dictionary were to define what We Theresa's Kids means, the entry would read: resilient, strong, intelligent, determined, and a person who perseveres.

After a 38-year hiatus, I returned to school in the spring of 2021 to obtain my Associate Degree for transfer to a four-year university in English Honors at Chabot College in Hayward, CA. As I entered my last year, in the fall of 2023, I felt an overwhelming urge to give back to a system that had given to me. On October 3, 2023, my eldest son, Marcus Angelo Bryant (MBII.info), took his last breath unaided by machines and was pronounced on October 6th. My son was an incredible young man, full of promise; his last words to me on October 1st were, “Don’t forget, Mommy, I’m ready for you to help me register for school.” Marcus had made the decision to further his education and was set to attend Laney College in the spring of 2024.

As a young child, Marcus struggled in school; however, in his 20s, he developed a love for literature. Marcus Garvey, Martin Luther King Jr., Napoleon Hill, and Christopher Elliott were among a few of his favorite authors. Marcus taught himself three different dialects of Spanish and spoke fluent Swahili.

Marcus had a saying, whenever anything noteworthy happened in his or his siblings’ lives, good or bad, he would say, 'We Theresa’s Kids.' In his honor, We Theresa’s Kids was founded as a reminder that where you start does not define where you can go. Recognizing that it takes a village to raise a child, We Theresa's Kids is dedicated to strengthening the foundation for lifelong learning and creating the changes needed to guide each child toward a brighter future.
